As a beginner IM I heard that you need back links to get your site to the top of serps. Getting these backlinks can be daunting if you know nothing about them and a raw noobie. I’ve been away from MN for about 18 months but I’m back now
I have learnt a few things about building them and would like to share for those who having a hard time getting started.
So here are a few ways I build my backlinks.
Diversity
For good ranking you need to diversify your backlinks. Too many of one kind of link will see your site drop gradually in the serps.
The types of backlinks I build are

1. Web 2.0 sites e.g wordpress, livejournal etc
2. Blog comments
3. Wiki links
4. Forum Profile links
5. Bookmarking sites
6. Directories
7. Article directories
8. Yahoo groups
9. Document sites e.g scribd, slideshare

For newbies, a budget is usually a problem, not everyone can afford to by those $97 products or $77 monthly. Usually time is the greatest resource we have. But it can be pretty heartbreaking building links at a pace that shows no results. There are free tools you can use to help you along and make it easier.

For bookmarking, pingfm is a great site. But signing up to all those sites can be tiring .Here is a pingfm bot that will cycle through all the sites and all you have to do is fill in the captcha and you’ll have all the sites ready to go in 10 mins as opposed to 2 hours. You have to register for free to get it and there is even a video of how it works. It is not affiliate link, everything I post here is free.
http://www.seosnipertech.com/225/pingfm-account-creator/

Instead of spending time clicking all those confirmation links in your email here is an email link clicker that will make it easier
http://www.sliqsubmitter.com/email-link-clicker.php

For web 2.0 sites signing up can be a pain. One really good free solution you can use is imacros firefox plugin. With the right one you can signup in minutes, all you have to do is put in the captcha. Imacros may sound technical but they are really easy to use. All you need is the free firefox imacros addon and an imacros script and you are good to go
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/imacros-for-firefox/

http://wiki.imacros.net/iMacros_for_Firefox#Social_Scripting

It possible to find imacros scripts for web2.0 sites, wikis and bookmarking sites, and article directories.

More to come later...

This is a great little resource for Newbies.

I myself am struggling with backlinking. Doing it myself manually takes too long for the kind of results that can be achieved, yet outsourcing usually results in money wasted as there are so many scams out there.

I wish there was more help available regarding link building.

What sort of help you looking for?

A step by step plan? A total outsource solution maybe?

Let me know as I'm putting together a network in this area and am looking a various options. I was thinking a complete guide, post Panda, as well as options to select either parts or a complete solution.

Wouldn'tbe cheap, but then quality costs :)

TBH Scoots I have no idea.

At present I can only work 2-3 hours a day as I am raising a 1 year old. Currently earn £200-£300 a month through aff marketing and probably spend £50-£100 on outsourcing.

Guess I am a little disappointed with my progress reading all these success stories.

I am small fry compared to most on here but am trying my best to make a success of this business.

Nice tips. Learning how to get backlinks when your new is one of the hardest things.

When you've learnt how to do it yourself you can outsource it to india or the philipines.

Web 2.0 Part 1
There are more than one hundred web 2.0 sites you can use to build your links. The diagram below courtersy of phpbuilt shows some of the current ones.
You can see which blogs have f0llow and nof0llow links. Both types of links are important to have in my opinion.

Also find attached a csv file with the login urls for most of the web 2.0 sites.

If you analyse top ten in serps in any niche you will see they have a mix of f0llow and n0follow links anchored links and non-anchored links, including links with no keyword anchor,e.g url of the page, read more, click here etc. I try make my links in a similar way and don't bother whether they are d0follow or not. Below is an example of what I mean about varying anchore. It is from one top ten ranking page. See how varied the anchors are? I bet you can't even guess which phrase they are ranking for.

Document Sharing sites
I also use them as a source of links for my sites. In fact I have one site that does not rank very well but 80% of it's traffic comes from 2 documents on scribd for the last 2 years.
The way I do it is to do an article in Word, with links to my site, add an image, sometimes I link it other times I don't, and then use a free doc to pdf converted like
http://www.doc2pdf.net/
After that I log into my account and upload the document. Done. Another backlink to my site. I try to make sure each is unique.I never post the same doc to multiple sites.
Here is a list of the 33 sites I have been posting to

I have just read a great article about optimising sites for link building and thus a nifty excuse to bump this cracking thread from RPGPhil.

The article talks about some key issues in link building such as, site cosmetics, quality of content, whether its too spammy (i.e. overloaded with ads) and level of interaction amongst others.

I really like the style of the article too and will definitely be looking out for more posts by the SEO Chicks, read the full article here; http://www.seo-chick...k-building.html

Link building really is a lot more straight forward than its made out to be :) It's more important to get the onsite stuff 100% correct

For example - hemocyl.com has the following meta description

<meta name="description" content="Nuratrim scientifically proven weight loss. Its unique formulation ensures that you have a reduced appetite, faster metabolic rate and the ability to burn fat easily." />
